Art Action Grant Scheme - Success Stories

Appledore Arts - Flowers in Art

The Flowers in Art project aims to deliver a series of workshops, talks and events to groups of flower arranging enthusiasts, amature gardeners and artists. The project will also explore the place of flowers as an art form and include specialist flower arranging classes by an Ikebana (Japanese Flower Arranging) Tutor, talks by professional garden designers and visits to gardens. Therefore will be an exhibition of flowers as art and a garden trail.

Worlington Shakespeare Club (18+)

The aim of this project is to give those who have never before had the opportunity to explore and enjoy the reading of Shakespeare. The group will then join with the Rural Devon Shakespeare Company (under 18's) to perform and present to the public "Romeo and Juliet" in a unique and quintessential rural setting on the banks of the Little Dart river at Worlington. Further performances will be held in Chulmleigh and Eggesford.

South Molton Skate Park Graffiti Project

Following years of hard work on behalf of the young people of South Molton and their adult supporters, a skateboard park facility and chillout area of teen seating and basketball equipment has been installed. Unfortunately the blank walls surrounding the facility are often a magnet for would-be graffiti artists, which spoils the attraction of the site and encourages vandalism.

The South Molton Youth Recreation Project has been awarded an Art Action Grant to enable them to run a competition for 8-11 and 12-17 years. The children will be invited to produce their own graffiti work to decorate the walls. From the entries, 5 children will be chosen from each age group to attend training sessions with professional graffiti artists, working through Beaford Arts.
They will receive four training sessions and the best designs from these will then be used by the graffiti artists to decorate the walls around the skate park.

Westward Ho! Youth Theatre Group

The Westward Ho! Youth Theatre Project is a newly formed group, whose aims are to teach young people, singing, dancing and drama. There are approximately 40 members ranging from 8 to 15 years of age, which is growing every week.

Westward Ho! Youth Theatre Group were awarded an Art Action Grant to enable them to purchase some new equipment.

As a result of the grant, it will help the children to perform professionally, but more importantly gain other skills such as learning how to dance, how to project their voices when singing, improve their acting skills and team work. It also enables the children to gain confidence, which will help them in future years.
